Indeed, it is in our own beds that we get the best rest. A bed usually consists of a bed frame and a soft mattress on it. Mattresses are typically quilted or encased in a heavy fabric. Modern mattresses are generally made of foam rubber, cotton, or a framework of metal springs. There are also air-filled or water-filled mattresses.
Basically, it is the mattress that makes a comfortable bed. It should be soft but firm, springy but not creaky, and it should be clean and free from dust, microorganisms, and foul smell. Because nothing beats our beds as our favorite comfort zone, we should always impart our best efforts to keep it in the best condition.
Mattresses degrade over time. They lose their firmness, springiness and no matter how we clean them; they are still dusty. Although we would always want to keep our old mattresses to save on money, time is sure to come that we may not have the choice but to replace them with new ones.
Here are some of the signs that you should make you decide to put that old mattress into the bin and buy a new one.
When It Is Heavily Infested
You can easily notice that your mattress is infested with bed bugs when you see that you have itchy red insect bites when you wake up. A bed bug infestation can be declared when there are traces of excrements, shed skins, and eggshells inside mattresses cover and in adjoining parts of the bed. An offensive and musky smell also persist when there is bug infestation.
Dust mites can also make you uncomfortable in your bed. Unlike bed bugs that feed on your blood, dust mites thrive on the flakes of your skin. They can be very itchy on contact and are hard to eliminate completely.
After cleaning thoroughly by vacuuming your mattress and applying the right chemicals and you feel that these pests are still there in your mattress, you should now decide to buy a new mattress.
When the Firmness is Gone
Modern mattresses in residential homes are usually made of rubber foams because of their availability, lower prices, and, lightweight feature. Upon purchase, they are soft but firm, but over time, the firmness can be diminished, which makes you feel you are lying on some bed with only a bedsheet on it.
Spring beds can also degrade, and you can notice it when the creaky sound gets louder upon each move on the bed.
When Dust Does’t Seem to Go Away
After vacuuming your mattress, forcefully tap the mattress with your open palm. If you see dust flying into the air or dropping into the floor, then your mattress should be changed because it has lived its serviceable life. Maybe you have forgotten that you bought that mattress a decade ago.
Mattresses can now be bought online. This will make it easier to decide to change your mattress because of the convenience.
