Totnes

Just a 25 minute drive east of Plymouth you can visit the charming market town of Totnes. Attractive to the more artistic of visitor Totnes is known for the Arts, with a cosmopolitan year round programme of national and local events often seen in much larger towns.  It was once said by the Devon writer Thomas Westcote (1567-1637), ‘this city-like town, with pleasant soil, fruitful country and healthful air’. This is true even though there is still the occasional  steam train with its own contribution to the atmosphere. It is part of the South Devon Railway and is well worth taking  a trip back in time even if you're not a railway enthusiast, as it is one of the West Country’s best loved tourist attractions.

The market town atmosphere and the historic surroundings will ensure you won’t be disappointed with your visit. Totnes is not a big town but does have a big history and you can spend a good day discovering hidden treasures or just relaxing by the river.

You could climb to the top of Totnes Castle (English Heritage) Built by Judhel, the Norman overlord of Totnes, has dominated the town for centuries. Your reward will be the beautiful views all around you. Or, if it’s raining, try the Elizabethan House Museum (1575) which is one of the finest restored Tudor town houses in England. It has rooms on three floors with a kitchen block linked to the main house. Outside there’s a courtyard and a herb garden. The museum itself contains a range of exhibits illustrating local social history, archaeology, clocks, costumes and toys and a room devoted to Charles Babbage’s inventions.

You can picnic or dine by the river or take a boat trip to Dartmouth. When staying in Plymouth a day trip out to Totnes will slow down your body clock, if that is what you want. Totnes is well known for its connection with therapists of all kinds and alternative lifestyles and its strong arts and crafts history, writers, musicians and other creative types have always been attracted to Totnes and today there are a number a galleries to visit.

But when you get back to your hotel in Plymouth or perhaps at work in your job in Plymouth you may be able to retrieve that chilled out atmosphere of Totnes to help you through the day.
