If you think you may have a budding musician in the family then take a look at the South West Music School. They are a music charity that, due to the geographical problems of the South West, do not have a fixed base but are a 'virtual' school working with young musicians on an individual basis in the area they live.

It is their aim to find the most gifted youngsters in Plymouth and the South West, those who show exceptional musical talent. South West Music School gives them all the support and encouragement needed in order to reach their full potential. Funding by the Department for Education means that each student has adequate resources to undertake the scheme and that all costs are met according to individual needs and, once accepted, applicants are able to apply for means tested grants. If you are a parent that may need some help with the cost of giving your child a musical education, this could be the solution for you.

Spaces are very limited so although your child doesn’t have to be grade 8 when they apply they will need to show that they are of a sufficient standard and have total commitment to their music.

They don’t necessarily have to play an instrument but may be an exceptional vocalist or their talents may lie in composition. There’s no restriction to their musical taste as all genres of music are catered for from classical to heavy metal. The only thing that all the students need to have in common other than a proven talent is a real passion for their music.

So providing your child is between 8 -16 years old then applications are invited around end of January each year until May with auditions taking place in June.

For their first year the students are placed on the Feeder Scheme and then are re-auditioned to see if they can progress on to the Core Programme. Once accepted they can stay on until the age of 18.
