Scoot-A-Long

Scoot-a-long is a Plymouth based charity which aims to provide mobility for the disabled in the South West. With their special all terrain scooters/wheelchairs and a specially adapted caravan they are able to take disabled children and adults in the South West on trips that they might not ordinarily be able to make. Places like Dartmoor, Exmoor or Bodmin Moor obviously present many problems for people using ordinary wheelchairs but not for the Scoot-A-Long team.

They have a team of dedicated and hard-working people with a never-say-die attitude that was put to the test a few years ago when achieving two World Records, one of which was for the team scooting 5,349.52 miles around the whole of Great Britain.

The other record was for the longest trip conducted by one person, which was won by John Duckworth who managed to go 1654.6 miles and is pictured above on the right.

Braving all types of weather they started from Land’s End and, scooting along at a maximum speed of 8mph, finished their trek four months later.

Having to traverse the Highlands of Scotland and then come all the way back to Land’s End proves the resolve and inner strength of the Scoot-A-Long team. But to complete such a journey, it’s not just grit and determination you need but some reliable equipment too. And that comes in the form of their old friend the Mayan Electric Scooter supplied by Horizon Mobility Ltd. Straight off the assembly line with no adaptations made for the trip, it proved itself more than capable for the record-busting trip.

Raising money to buy scooters for the disabled is how it all started back in 2007 but the charity has evolved and has since been providing trips for disabled children and adults to places like the Camel Trail and Dartmoor National Park.

The latest challenge to face the team is to provide mobility on the water. For the wheelchair bound, there are very few opportunities to enjoy a boat trip on Plymouth Sound. There are of course plenty of boat owners willing to offer their services but the facilities are just not available to allow a dozen wheelchair users to get aboard.

Not letting that put them off, the Scoot-A-Long team have embarked on the task of raising enough funds to buy their own 23ft boat completely fitted out for the disabled.

With the Highlands of Scotland just a distant memory this particular mountain they have to climb amounts to £45,000 and could be their biggest challenge yet.
