Plymouth and District Trades Union Council is the umbrella organisation for Trades Union Branches in Plymouth and the surrounding areas.
There are 16 affiliated trade unions within the PTUC and represent almost  forty thousand working people locally.
They aim to campaign where necessary in order to achieve a fair deal at work for their members and also about social and environmental issues in our communities. They see part of their duty is to protect our environment and create a sustainable future for the community.

With all the pressures put on working people today and the threat of job losses, it is the opinion of the PTUC that the community should stand together. They encourage other unions which are recognised by the TUC and have members employed in the Plymouth area, to affiliate to the Plymouth Trades Union Council.

Strength in numbers seems to be what is needed to make your voice heard and make people sit up and listen. So an important part of the PTUC responsibilities is to represent Plymouth workers at national and international events. The Plymouth Trades Union Council is registered with Britain’s TUC and so has links with 58 UK trades unions.

They aim to support local unions by sharing information and promoting relevant training and education programmes for union representatives. They see it as an important link building exercise between different union bodies which in turn makes the whole organisation stronger.

As they represent a number of local unions and a good proportion of the workforce, they are able to lobby politicians at local, national and international level more effectively in order to implement policies that will benefit people at work.
