About Devon and Cornwall Police and the BCU's.

Devon and Cornwall Police cover the largest geographical police area in England which reaches 180 miles from the Dorset and Somerset borders in the east to the Isles of Scilly in the far west.
Included are  the cities of Exeter and Plymouth and popular seaside resorts such as Torquay and Newquay. Together with a large rural population all sectors of the community present very different policing challenges.

With  population of around 1.5 million increasing to over eight million with all the holiday makers in the summer months it can lead to highs and lows of policing activity during the calendar year.

The Force is divided into three basic command units known as BCU’s . They are  Cornwall & The Isles of Scilly, Plymouth and Devon. Each BCU has its own commander and they are subdivided into sectors and the Police force in Plymouth has four sectors with each having its own Police station in Plymouth.

Devon and Cornwall Police history dates back to 1836 when 24 borough police forces were formed across the whole of Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. In those days parish constables were elected once a year by the vestry meeting in each parish but the office was not popular due to there being no wages.

It was in the 1850s the Devon County Constabulary and Cornwall County Constabulary were formed, bringing a new professional image to the policing of the South West.. These constabularies, together with Exeter City Police and the Plymouth Borough Police, saw a series of mergers resulting in the formation of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary in 1967.

Police Cadets

There is a new police cadet scheme for young people between the ages of 13 – 18 which is open to all regardless of their career ambitions or capabilities. Cadets will develop skills and confidence that will be of benefit to communities and employers in the future.
The aims of our cadet scheme are to promote positive images of young people and the police in the community and help young people develop skills, social responsibility and knowledge to make good life choices.
