Plymouth U3A

It can be a worrying thing for those whose working life is soon to come to an end. Being in full time employment gives you a sense of purpose and for a good part of the week you are meeting people and having some sort of social interaction with colleagues or customers.

So when it all finally comes to an end through retirement or redundancy, those who have little social contact outside of the workplace, can find themselves isolated even in a city the size of Plymouth.

To start joining clubs and associations is one way to keep mind and body going, but if you have not done this sort of thing during your working life, then this idea can be a little daunting.

The longer you are isolated the harder it becomes to force yourself to get out and meet new people.

So, who better to turn to than an organisation that understands the difficulties and aims to provide people in the Plymouth area a way of re-launching their social lives.

The University of the Third Age (U3A) enables members to share educational, creative and leisure activities.  Throughout the country there are over 800 branches of the U3A with more than 270,000 members.

Plymouth U3A is open to people of all backgrounds and abilities - all it needs is a desire to keep learning, socialising and staying active throughout life.

The Plymouth branch of U3A have in the region of 700 members with 50 interest groups and is managed by a group of volunteers whose aims are to celebrate the capabilities and potential that older people can still give to society.

They encourage people no longer in full time employment to help each other by sharing knowledge, skills, interests and experiences. They open new horizons for their members and endeavour to demonstrate the benefits and enjoyment that is to be gained by learning throughout life.

Between all the U3As they offer the chance to study over 300 different subjects in such fields as the arts, languages, history, life sciences, philosophy, computing, crafts, photography and walking.

This is not a profit making organisation and is run for the members, by the members, and costs just £12pa to join the Plymouth U3A. If you find yourself housebound for whatever reason and are unable to physically meet up with the Plymouth group there is also a virtual U3A with details available on their website.
