Plymouth Radio Club has been in existence for over 70 years, was re-formed in 2004 and in its current form has gone from strength to strength with an ever expanding and diverse membership.
Plymouth Radio Club has a mandate to further the cause of amateur radio "for the purpose of self training in communication by radio telecommunications" (as it states on the amateur radio license). |
| What does amateur radio offer me? |
|
With the Plymouth Radio Club however they don’t only concentrate on the hobby but also to provide a forum for radio amateurs, 'short wave listeners' and their partners from the Plymouth area and beyond, to meet and to socialise.
In fact like most successful clubs PARC seem to have a very strong social aspect to the club and have formed a group called the Radio Roosters Breakfast Club which is open to anyone who just wants to meet up and have a natter about anything at all.
|
 |
Rooster Breakfast Club meetings are held monthly on the first Saturday of every month in and around the Plymouth area.
Meeting at places like superstore coffee shops, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, etc and also at roadside eating places and garden centres.
A Rooster Breakfast consists of a group of people who get together to enjoy each others company and have a good natter. They are loosely associated with Amateur Radio because although they are mostly licensed amateur radio operators they also bring along their wives, families and friends, children, brothers, sisters, grannies and granddads, everyone is welcome to come and join in.
And a "full" breakfast isn't mandatory, tea and toast, or even just coffee is acceptable. What is required is the desire to meet other people and have a good friendly get together.
We meet mostly at superstore coffee shops, Morrisons, Sainsburys, Tesco etc. And at Tamar View Garden Centre.
Roosters aren’t a “club”, there is no committee, no membership, no fees to pay. You just turn up about 9 o'clock and join in the pleasure of meeting nice people. |
For those who do want to get involved with with the club they meet every 2nd Tuesday of the month at the Cherry Tree public house in Ham Drive, Plymouth at 7:30PM. Here you can just come along and see what the club is all about. They usually organise a demonstaration, talk or special event as part of the meeting and normally starts at about 8:00PM.

You will be asked to contribute £1 to help pay for the monthly venue whether you are a member or not and they'll have a raffle draw on the night.
If the meetings and the social life of the Plymouth Radio Club just isn't enough for you then they also have a highly successful training team attached to Plymouth Radio Club with instructions for the Radio Communications Examinations. |
 |
The Plymouth Training Team runs training courses for the Radio Communications Examinations. They run courses for the Foundation and Intermediate Exams and can arrange examinations only for the Advanced Exam, but advice and support can be given.
Courses are held from time to time when there are sufficient candidates to make a course viable. The Registered Lead Instructors are all volunteers so courses are also dependant on instructors commitments.
Classes are held at;
The Cherry Tree Public House, Ham Drive, Plymouth, usually on a Monday evening commencing around 7.00 pm.
