Plymouth Devils compete in the Speedway Premiere League and ride at their 216 metres track at the St. Boniface Arena in Coypool Plymouth on  a Friday evening (Saturday alternative) with the tapes up at around 7.30pm.

The Devils haven’t always charged around at 70mph in their yellow colours with the Red Devil emblazoned on their chests and not always at St. Boniface Arena. Originally nicknamed the Tigers they sported orange and white racing jackets when they started racing on Saturday June 13th 1931 at Pennycross Stadium and attracted crowds of 6000, more than Plymouth Argyle are able achieve at times today.

Following some poor results in just 3 years, the crowds drifted away and under threat of closure a new promoter was found and the team name was changed to the Panthers. Unfortunately the newly named team only survived until May 12th 1937 and Plymouth speedway wasn’t seen again until after the war.

Thursday April 24th 1947 saw the return of speedway to Pennycross Stadium as the war weary population were once again eager for sporting entertainment. With another new promoter, George "Jimmy" Baxter, it was then decided the team were going to be known as the Devils and started wearing the colours they still wear today.

For all this time they raced on decomposed granite but before the start of the season in 1949 a new surfaced of powdered brick dust was laid, which was readily available in the heavily bombed city of Plymouth. Speedway only continued for 5 years and in 1954 greyhound racing in Plymouth together with stock car racing took its place.

Perhaps like cats (Tigers and Panthers) the ‘Devils’ also have 9 lives, as in 1959 speedway once again returned to Pennycross, but due to falling attendances eventually ceased once more in 1970.

Some 36 years passed before the club was re-formed in 2006 by former St Austell Gulls rider Mike Bowden at their new home at St. Boniface Arena.
