The problem is coming up with an idea that you can afford to implement and is something that you have the skills to carry out effectively. Many people trade on eBay and Activ Classified Free Adverts and sell items they pick up at car boot sales in Plymouth but this doesn’t suit everybody and may not be much more than a part time job or hobby that boosts existing income. Another popular idea is starting an ironing service, collecting customer’s clothes and delivering them a few days later pressed and ironed. This is a full time job and very time consuming and there is always the added problem of collecting and delivering difficulties. In any business like this you will find that you will have trouble with some customers being out when you call or perhaps forgetting to leave out the garments at the agreed times. It’s not a business that is easily going to make you enough money unless you are extremely professional and highly organised.

A successful business is one that has a high reward - low time ratio. It is obvious that most businesses will fail if it takes 300 hours a month to earn £2000 whereas a business that takes 30 hours a month to earn £1000 is more likely to grow and be around for many years.
We have come one simple idea that we feel has the scope to grow into a fulltime occupation and with the possibility to create employment for others. It is not a new idea but does provide a service people need. It’s simply a case of finding something that people or businesses will always be looking for and providing a better service than your competitors. Our idea is targeted at businesses as they are always interested in saving money or increasing profits. If you want your business to be successful long term then you need to provide a service that is not just cheaper than the competition but is better.

It is a low cost start-up businesses and anyone who can walk and talk should be able to master. Like any business you need to take it seriously and will only succeed if your customers trust you. If you know a few people in the right places to get you started then that would be an advantage but if not, then you will need to work hard at building a relationship with prospective customers. When they get to know you and learn to trust you, then they will buy from you. Once you have won their trust you must at all times struggle to keep their trust as it is a lot easier to lose a good reputation than it is to gain one.
This business has a mass market and there is plenty of work out there for the people willing to put the effort in. This business has the potential for the successful entrepreneur to employ others and eventually adopt a managerial role.
The one thing that will stop you is apathy. If you stop too long to think about things you will lose the impetus to get out there and find your first customers. Once you get your first customers you will find that if you provide them with a great service then they will find new customers for you.

Business idea:
Set yourself up as a leaflet distributor. It’s a service that many businesses require. You only need to look at the pile of leaflets on your own door mat. They include free newspapers, insurance companies, takeaways, local restaurants, garden services or property developers and estate agents.
Usually businesses will pay between £25 and £40 per thousand of leaflets delivered depending on the area. The cost of distribution is your time and some travel expenses to the target area if you need transport. You should be able to deliver to between 100 - 200 properties per hour. Once you have several customers and you are delivering 4 or 5 leaflets at the same time to each property then you can see the rewards can be very interesting. It means you could be delivering 1000 leaflets per hour earning between £25 and £40.
Where these businesses have failed in the past is when they lose the trust of their customers who find out that their leaflets have been dumped in a bin around the corner. If you can ensure that the leaflets are delivered as promised and on time then there is no reason for you not succeeding. Go back to your customers each week for a month after you have completed the delivery and find out how many customers they think have responded to the leaflet drop. Keep the records and use them as testimonials to use in finding new customers.
At the beginning you may need to get some leaflets yourself and business cards printed and a mobile phone. Then approach local businesses and offer your services, providing them with the mobile phone number to contact you.
You can run this business as a sole trader or build it up by employing other people to do the delivering for you. You can then spend your time on sales and marketing of your distribution service.
