Apple Bobbing – This traditional game will always provide a few laughs for children as well as adults alike. It involves putting apples in a large bowl or tub of water and challenging your guests to get one out by just using their mouth. It’s harder than you it looks so have a few towels at the ready. |

Pumpkin Lanterns – These can be made by cutting off the top of a pumpkin, hollowing them out by removing all the flesh which you can make into a soup for bonfire night the week after. Then by cutting various holes for the eyes, nose, and mouth you can carve a face for your pumpkin. Light a small candle or nightlight and place it inside to illuminate the lantern. You can be as creative as you like by making happy, sad or scary faces and award a prize for the best one. |
Bouncing Eyeballs – Draw or paint bloodshot eyes on a number of ping-pong balls and using a hollowed out pumpkin or bowl as a target, the idea is to bounce the balls and to see who get their eye in first. Play one at time or for more fun all at once. |
Halloween Creepy Corners – In each corner of the room attach a Halloween themed pictures like a witch, bat, ghost or black cat. Play some spooky music and when it stops each child runs to a corner. Then take a piece of paper from a witch’s hat and the image on the paper identifies which corner is out of the game. Return the piece of paper into the hat, turn on the music and repeat until there is one person left. |
Dead Man’s Coffin – Paint a cardboard box (about 40 cm high) black or decorate in some way to look like a coffin. Cut a hole in the side big enough for a small arm to go through. Then place inside 5 small bowls of prepared food which the children will have line up and guess what they are. We suggest using mashed bananas for brains, skinned tomatoes or grapes for eyes, cold spaghetti for intestines, wet breadsticks for old bones and dried orange skin for dead skin. Get them to write down what each one is and award a prize accordingly.
| Mask Making – For younger children, making Halloween masks out of card and coloured paper is a great way to keep them occupied and they can wear them afterwards as part of a fancy dress costume. |
Haunted House – This can be in the house or garden by just leaving a trail of sweets and scary surprises along the way. Prepare a spooky tale as you follow it round and wait for the shocks and shrieks!
| Trick or Treating – This long-standing tradition involves getting dressed up in fancy dress and knocking on people’s front doors and offering them the ultimatum ‘Trick or treat?’ To avoid having a trick played on them they must hand over a small treat such as sweets or cakes. If you are planning on staying in on Halloween then why not prepare for trick-or-treaters by popping down to your local Plymouth Newsagents a buy a few sweets to give. |
