The city’s football team, Plymouth Argyle (also known as the ‘Pilgrims’) plays in League 2, having dropped from the Championship only a few years ago. Its loyal fans, the “green army”, continue to support the club and there is still a healthy turn-out at Home Park, located in Plymouth’s Central Park, for each home game. Formed in 1886, the club has come close to closure in recent times and hasn’t completed the restructure of the stadium which started several years ago, but has now been rescued by James Brent, a local businessman.

There are plenty of locations to visit in the area surrounding Plymouth. Mount Edgcumbe is over the border in Cornwall on the Rame Peninsula and is jointly owned by Cornwall Council and Plymouth Council. Restored by the 6th Earl of Edgcumbe in the middle of the 20th century after it was gutted by enemy action during the Second World War, the house was originally built between 1547 and 1553. The beautiful gardens overlooking the River Tamar are open for free to the public all year round although the house is closed during the winter months. Saltram House, a National Trust property, also opens its gardens to the public for free all year round and is situated on the other side of Plymouth overlooking the River Plym. It has been home to the Parker family for nearly 300 years and both the house itself and its magnificent gardens are host to a variety of events throughout the year.

For the more adventurous, Mount Batten Watersports Centre is the place to go. Here you can experience a range of water-based activities, such as kayaking, power boating or sailing, using the ‘Pay as you Play’ scheme. This means you can try out a sport to see if you enjoy it before signing up to a full course. Alternatively why not try skiing or tobogganing on the slopes at Plymouth Ski Centre near Marsh Mills? Or you may want to take to the skies in a light aircraft from Plymouth’s airport. Whatever you’d like to do, Plymouth can probably provide it.
