Christmas in Plymouth 2011

Christmas in Plymouth city centre 2011
This year Plymouth Council has arranged the ‘Christmas Light Switch On’ in Plymouth city centre to be on November 17 2011. It marks the start of this year’s Plymouth Winter Festival.

For the countdown there will be Mark Ormrod the Royal Marine who on Christmas Eve 2007 was seriously injured by a landmine in Afghanistan, losing both legs and an arm whilst serving with 40 Commando. With Mark’s determination to walk again and prove doctors wrong he has been an inspiration to others in similar situations.
Mark will be joined by Michael Collin’s of Britain’s Got Talent and Ronan Parke who was runner up in the competition.

Crowds of people are sure to turn out on November 17th to see the launch of the Plymouth Winter Festival (formerly known as the Christmas Festival) which will herald the opening of the Christmas Market and the Winter Wonderland in Plymouth on Armada Way.

With an open air ice rink situated on the Piazza there will be plenty of Christmas atmosphere in and around Plymouth city centre this year, especially as the children will be able to visit Santa’s Grotto and meet his little Elf helpers which can also be found on the Piazza. Together with dozens of gift stalls at the Christmas Fayre there will be plenty for the whole family to enjoy whilst tucking into their roasted chestnuts.
On December 1st Father Christmas will show off his reindeer at the Lantern Parade with Plymouth dance groups and local bands in attendance.

There are many other events going on all over the Plymouth area this Christmas, many of which are being held at our local National Trust houses. You can have a look at what type of Christmas events are happening by using our National Trust Properties events in Plymouth guide.
