British Firework Championships 2011, Plymouth

For a truly spectacular event visit Plymouth in August for the British Firework Championships 2011. This annual event is set to take place on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th August at dusk and always brings tens of thousands to Plymouth Hoe and Plymouth Barbican.

Six magnificent pyrotechnic displays take place over two evenings where the teams compete for the highly-prized title of British Firework Champions in Plymouth. Spectators of all ages will be found all along the Plymouth waterfront, many returning to favourite viewing spots such as in front of Plymouth National Marine Aquarium, to be dazzled by the latest creations of the leading fireworks companies in Britain. The six competing companies will take it in turns to put on their most breathtaking displays from the Plymouth breakwater at Mount Batten according to a preset firing order starting at around 9.30pm each evening.

Live music from Heart Radio from 6.30pm

The entertainment starts from 6.30pm on Plymouth Hoe with Plymouth’s Heart Radio providing live music. There will also be fairground rides and stalls providing refreshments, from burgers and hotdogs to hold and cold drinks.

Six judges, a mixture of industry experts and Plymouth locals, will be situated high up in Plymouth Citadel, an ideal location from which to view the displays. The fireworks are set up along the breakwater which juts out into Plymouth Sound from Mount Batten, providing a safe site from which to operate.

Let’s hope Plymouth weather conditions are dry and clear, as they were on the second day of last year’s event. Check out the Plymouth weather forecast on this site so you are well-prepared.

No-one is absolutely sure, but it is widely accepted that fireworks were invented accidentally by a Chinese cook in the 7th century when he mixed together three ingredients commonly used in the kitchen - saltpetre, sulphur and charcoal. The same components are used for gunpowder, as produced by the Plymouth and Dartmoor Gunpowder Company in the 19th century. Today China is the largest manufacturer and exporter of fireworks in the world. Professional firework companies such as Star Fireworks, winner of last year’s Plymouth competition, import most of their products from China.

There are plenty of great locations from which to view the British Firework Championships 2011 in Plymouth. Plymouth Hoe, Plymouth Barbican and the Plymouth foreshore are the most obvious, and regular park-and-ride buses are being laid on by Plymouth’s First bus company from the George junction, Milehouse and Coypool on both evenings, as well as the usual bus routes available from Plymouth Citybus. Most of the car parks in Plymouth city centre will stay open until midnight and the multi-storey behind Plymouth National Marine Aquarium will be open until 11pm, but Plymouth Council advises against driving due to the numbers likely to be turning out for this event.
