The climax of the week is University Plymouth Freshers Ball, with a line-up of superb live bands and the obligatory fancy dress. This introductory week is planned and run by the University Plymouth Students Union, UPSU, and is the first of many fun events arranged by this charitable organisation in each academic year. UPSU also offers advice and support to students on housing, finance, and other matters. |
| University Plymouth graduates are invited to attend the graduation ceremony at the end of their final year. The 2011 University Plymouth graduation ceremony was held on Plymouth Hoe, a fabulous setting with fantastic views across Plymouth Sound and, this year, bathed in glorious sunshine. Proud parents in their Sunday best and excited students in their formal gowns milled around the area taking photos as the Vice Chancellor, Professor Wendy Purcell, urged them to enjoy the celebrations before they start on the serious stuff of finding a job. |

Students aren’t just left to their own devices when they leave Plymouth University. An alumni site, the Graduate Gateway, is available for those looking for jobs and careers or post-graduate courses. Teamed with Gradsouthwest, which offers a free online recruitment service, the gateway offers career bootcamps, short practical skills sessions, help with CVs, and a chance to mix with prospective employers at careers fairs. The educational institution gained university status in 1992, bringing together Plymouth Polytechnic, Rolle College Exmouth, Exeter College of Art and Design, Seale-Hayne College, Tavistock College, and Plymouth School of Maritime Studies. University Plymouth’s second Vice Chancellor, Roland Levinsky, encouraged the centralisation of the university campus. Despite his untimely death (electrocution by live power cables) in January 2007, his plans continued - Exmouth’s Faculty of Arts was moved to the new Roland Levinsky arts building in August 2007 and Rolle College, home of teacher training in the south west, closed the following year when its students were brought to the new Rolle Building. |
| Today, University Plymouth courses cover a diverse range of subjects and the university is made up of a number of different faculties and schools.
