Plymouth restaurants cater for all tastes, whether you prefer Italian, Chinese, Indian, Greek, Turkish, Japanese, Moroccan, French, Spanish, Thai, or good old English fare. You can find places to eat on Plymouth Barbican, in Plymouth city centre, and overlooking Plymouth Sound. There are eateries to suit all pockets, from fast food to top quality multi-course meals. Plymouth owes its cosmopolitan outlook to a variety of influences: firstly, the port of Plymouth receives many visitors from all over the world who bring their own recipes with them; secondly, it’s always been a city of sailors who have travelled to many far-flung lands and experienced the cuisine on offer at those destinations; and thirdly, Plymouth University and other Plymouth colleges attract students and lecturers from overseas who like to be able to taste a reminder of home.
The Tanner brothers, Chris and James, provide some of the best food in the city. Celebrity chefs with appearances on TV shows like Ready, Steady, Cook and Saturday Kitchen, the brothers opened their famous Tanners restaurant on the Barbican on 17th July 1999. They use local food suppliers and create their dishes fresh each day so you enjoy the very best of local produce. The brothers also manage the Barbican Kitchen, a brasserie located in the same building as the historic Plymouth Gin Distillery. The modern decor of the Kitchen contrasts with the centuries-old distillery building and the food is first class.

Article about the Theatre Royal Plymouth

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall opened his second River Cottage Canteen in Plymouth in September 2011. He has visited the city before for book-signings and has always felt welcome but it was the “stunning views” from the Royal William Yard that persuaded Fearnley-Whittingstall and his fellow investors to set up their new restaurant there. He hopes to source all produce used in his restaurant from suppliers within a 50-mile radius.
Another famous chef soon to grace Plymouth’s restaurant circuit is Gary Rhodes. Rhodes has announced that he will be opening a brand new restaurant, as well as a bar and brasserie, in Plymouth Dome in the summer of 2012. The restaurant, to be called Rhodes West, will have panoramic views over Plymouth Sound and will make the best possible use of the Dome, which has been empty since Plymouth City Council closed it in 2006.
